Norfolk Bicycling and Walking Network Assessment

Project Description:

About the Project:

The purpose of this study is to analyze the bicycling and walking conditions in the northeast quadrant of the city, develop future bicycling and walking network recommendations, and focus on how to develop a safer, more connected network of on-street and off-street bicycle facilities, sidewalks, and street crossings throughout Norfolk.

The project area is a quadrant in the northeast part of the city - north of Norfolk Avenue and east of N. 13th Street/Highway 81 - but will also consider immediate bikeway and sidewalk connections to the east and south within the city. Results of the assessment will be used to develop bicycling and walking network recommendations for the Benjamin Avenue reconstruction project.

The project area contains significant local destinations, including Northeast Community College, Norfolk Public Library, Norfolk Senior High School, Norfolk Middle School, and many businesses along major corridors (such as Benjamin Avenue and Norfolk Avenue).
