TaHaZouka Park Improvements
This park consists of 180.3 acres along the Elkhorn River. There is
a successful incorporation of the old and the new at this location.
Included in the original park boundaries are facilities built back
in the WPA days from 1936 to 1943. The old park area is heavily
shaded by many stately old trees and the focal point is the large
lagoon, left over from the days when the Elkhorn River flowed
through the area where the park is now located. Also in the original
park area there are 4
rental
cabins, 2 large
picnic shelters, 2 small picnic shelters, 1 sand volleyball court,
multiple playground areas, 1 lighted official
softball field (field #5), bathrooms at two locations, picnic
tables, barbeque grills, canoe access to the Elkhorn River, fishing
opportunities at the river and the lagoon (there is a handicapped
fishing platform along the lagoon) and a public
campground located between the river and the lagoon. A new
Off-Leash Dog Recreation Area and the rail head to the
Cowboy
Trail, are available for the public to use.
The $191,000 lagoon renovation project was completed in 2005. The
project consisted of over 19,000 cu. yards of sediment removed to
deepen the lagoon, the construction of two 20' x 32' jetties, the
addition of one underwater aerator and four fountain aerators and
concluded with the restocking of fish.
Here are pictures taken
during the project.
Athletic facilities have been built on newer additions to the
park and they include:
Horseshoe Court Complex
This is a lighted and fenced 24 court horseshoe court complex
that is sanctioned for championship play. There are concrete
walkways between each pit and the compound has an underground
sprinkler system. There are individual rubber pit covers to cover
the clay and fence hangers for each and there is a wash tub for
cleaning of the shoes. There are bleachers for viewing events. The
local club throws weekly and hosts tournaments throughout the
season.
Four-Court Sand Volleyball Area
This is a popular area in the park
where you regularly see one or more of the four courts with teams
playing against each other.
Softball Complex
There is an official three field softball complex (fields #1,#2 &
# 3) with a concession stand and a second story scoreboard/officials
room. The fields are lighted, have scoreboards, sprinkler systems,
covered dugouts and bleacher seating. There is a small playground
next to field #1. Ballfield #4 is located a short distance west from
the complex. Further west and into the original park area is the
location of field #5. Youth baseball is being played on field #5
(until the new youth complex is finished) in the spring and summer
and then the outfield is set up for the men's flag football program
that uses it late summer and into the fall. Scheduling use of the
softball fields is handled by the Norfolk Softball Association under
contract by the City.
Youth Ball field Complex
Just east of and adjoining the existing softball complex there is
a 5 field youth complex. The complex consists of 3 regulation youth,
grass infield baseball fields and 2 regulation girls fastpitch
softball fields and include full lighting, scoreboards, sprinkler
systems, bleachers with shade structures, a playground and handicap parking spaces. These fields are for
youth use only, no adults.
River Run
Disc Golf Course
A new 9-hole course was built in the wooded area along the
Elkhorn River in early 2006 and was expanded to 19 holes in the
spring of 2007. The beginning of the course is located
along the southeast edge of the softball field #4 parking lot and
winds eastward along the river. Disc
golfers should find this heavily wooded course challenging and
a compliment to the more "open" Skyview Park Disc Golf course.
